MARKET NOTE
Price honesty: the strongest value band is roughly $1,100–$2,300, where a torque sensor, hydraulic discs, real fenders/lights/rack, and either a large battery or belt drive can coexist. $3,200–$4,500 can be justified only when it buys a serviceable Bosch/Brose mid-drive, belt/IGH or CVT drivetrain, better brakes, dealer support and a genuinely integrated commuter chassis—not merely a hidden batter

Gazelle
Top PickBosch Performance Line Speed motor, Gates belt and Enviolo CVT eliminate routine drivetrain maintenance entirely. Four-piston brakes and a 10-year frame warranty back a $4,500 price that buys durability, not badge value.

Aventon
A 37 lb frame carries a Gates belt and double-sided torque sensor for $1,499 — lighter and cleaner than most bikes twice its price. Tektro 180 mm hydraulics stop it short despite the minimal weight.
$1,999
Velotric
A 730 Wh pack and adjustable air fork deliver measured 30+ mile range without inflating price past $1,999. SensorSwap torque mode smooths hill starts that cadence-only motors fake.
$2,295
Ride1Up
Brose mid-drive with shift-sensing tuning centralizes motor mass and reads rider effort more precisely than hub-motor competitors. Tektro Orion four-piston brakes add stopping margin most $2,295 commuters skip.

BUDGETA carbon belt and torque sensor appear on a sub-$1,200 folder, components usually reserved for pricier bikes. Hydraulic brakes and a seatpost battery suit train commutes better than they suit fast descents.
$1,399
Lectric
180 mm rotors and 2.3 mm-thick steel stopped a 300+ lb rider-bike combo in WIRED's downhill test. At 66 lb the frame trades stair-carry convenience for genuine load capacity most budget commuters lack.

Aventon
Dual-sided torque sensing pairs with regenerative braking for measured 44-96 mile range depending on regen use. Altus 8-speed gearing remains the weak link under the motor's 96 Nm output.
